Life Science Buffers
Balanced salt solutions and powders used for molecular, protein, nucleic acid, and cell biology applications including cell culture, electrophoresis, ELISA, and chromatography processes; available in a variety of formulations and grades.
Buffer solutions serve to keep pH (acidity or alkalinity) nearly constant in a variety of chemical and biological applications. For example, a bicarbonate buffer helps maintain the pH of blood, a buffered saline maintains cellular contents at a consistent pH level, and buffers help maintain a narrow pH range for enzymes to function correctly.
Most biological samples used in research are kept at a pH of about 7.4. Common biological buffers used for tissue culture include Dulbeccos phosphate buffered saline (PBS), Tris base, HEPES, MOPS, PIPES, and other formulations developed for specific cell lines or applications. Most buffers used in cell culture are also DNase-, RNase-, and protease-free.
The choice of buffer for a particular biological reaction or site depends on several factors:
- Temperature
- Desired or target pH
- Buffer toxicity (to the system)
- Buffer interactions with other system components

LICOR Odyssey MES SDS Running Buffer Powder (pack of 5)
Odyssey Mini Gels are polyacrylamide gels designed to separate a wide range of protein sizes via PAGE or SDS-PAGE. Each box contains 10 pre-cast gels. Our gels feature larger well volumes for easier sample loading and are cast in a neutral pH buffer to increase gel stability. They also run at neutral pH, which minimizes protein modification compared to Tris-glycine gels. Odyssey Mini Gels are available in several gradients with 10, 12, or 15 numbered wells. Our gels feature a shelf life of up to 6 months at room temperature and 12 months at 2–8C.

In biological experiments, it is important to maintain the pH of the solutions used. Buffers, which are mixtures of weak acids and their appropriate conjugate bases, are commonly used in these experiments. Most biological reactions occur when the buffer is at its effective pH range of 6 to 8. Furthermore, the acids and bases used in the biological reaction should not produce chelates with metal ions. For these reasons, Dr. Good developed several aminoethane and aminopropane sulfonic acids that are now widely used for biological research and analysis. Goods buffers have the following characteristics: 1) High water-solubility. 2) Low cell membrane permeability. 3) Consistent acid-base dissociation constants. 4) Low metal chelating capability. 5) High chemical stability. 6) Low absorption spectra in UV and visible regions.

MES is a buffering agent used in biochemistry and molecular biology that was selected and described by Good et al It is a zwitterionic morpholinic buffer that is useful for a pH range of 5 5 6 7 and commonly used for cell culture media as a running buffer in electrophoresis and for protein purification in chromatography MES lacks the ability to form a complex with most metal ions and is recommended for use as a non-coordinating buffer in solutions with metal ions MES is often used in buffered culture media for bacteria yeast and mammalian cells It is toxic towards plants at high concentrations but can be used in culture media at lower concentrations for plants Due to low ionic mobility MES is regarded as an excellent buffer for use in capillary electrochromatography MES is often employed as a substitute for the highly toxic cacodylate as well as a substitute for the non-zwitterionic buffers citrate and malate

PIPES (Piperazine N,N' bis(2 ethanesulfonic acid)) is a highly stable biochemical reagent used to prepare buffer solutions that maintain a consistent pH. This 50g quantity is ideal for laboratories requiring precise pH control in applications such as protein chemistry, enzyme kinetics, and electrophoresis. PIPES buffers are used in biological assays where maintaining a neutral pH (around 7.0) is critical for enzyme activity and the stability of proteins. This versatile buffer is commonly employed in cellular biology, microbiology, and various biochemical processes that need accurate and reliable pH regulation.

Buffers perform an important task in biological experiments, often designed to keep pH within the 6-8 range where most biological reactions occur. Dr. Norman Good, the developer of HEPES, wanted to create buffers that prioritized this function, while also providing other benefits. Dr. Good produced a series of “Good buffers” – including HEPES (2-[4-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazinyl]ethanesulfonic acid) – that are nearly ubiquitous in their usage even now. The Good series of buffers share the following additional characteristics: 1) High water-solubility. 2) Low cell membrane permeability. 3) Consistent acid-base dissociation constants. 4) Low metal-chelating capability. 5) High chemical stability. 6)Low absorption spectra in UV and visible regions.
